Communicating with patients: Giving information 2

Here are more skills that help deliver comprehensible information to patients:

  • Check patient's understanding after explaining
"I have been giving you a lot of information now. I wonder if you could tell me what you have taken from this?"
"So that I can be certain that I have explained this test, could you tell me what you understand will happen. It is especially important that you outline what you have to do to prepare."
  • Relate explanations to patient's illness framework
That is, set your explanations within the context of the patient's ideas, concerns and expectations, need for action, motivation, perceived benefits
  • Check if the patient has any concerns or any questions
New worries and questions might surface during an interview so it is important to check more than once
  • Determine amount of information patient wants
Avoid overloading patients with information. However, you must remember that you are obliged to provide complete information to patients. Breaking up the information into "chunks" may be more helpful than delivering it all at once
  • Use specific advice statements

Role-play and discussion

Remember that not all skills are relevant in every interview. Think about how you might use these skills in your own practice. With your partner, set up a practice scene and role-play a conversation with patient and doctor, in which the doctor explains a certain procedure to the patient. Change roles, repeat and then give each other feedback on your experience with the play.
